a path out of poverty

The Walking with Africans Foundation seeks to empower the rural poor to raise their living standards by establishing their own small business enterprises. Through a credible and innovative microfinance program, WAF aspires to cultivate a culture of saving and financial independence.

The cornerstone of our mission is “harambe,” which in Swhili means “working together in unity” or “pulling together.” Our role goes beyond simple loan provision. By organizing participants into peer groups that draw on the strong bonds of African community life, WAF promotes collective action for community development, which includes fighting against HIV/AIDS through prevention, testing and treatment.

Living HARAMBE: The people behind the loans

Our program launches in Kibwezi in collaboration with Efforts of the Poor in Development, Kenya (EPID-Kenya), a local nongovernmental organization dedicated to community development and education. We look forward to sharing stories of loan recipients as their ideas and efforts become sustainable livelihoods. Be a part of our journey!
